Gunnar Eyewear for the Office – Part 1

A couple of the guys at the office got some Gunnar glasses a few months ago, and have been liking them. I finally broke down and bought some when I saw them $20 off at Deals.Woot. They offered a limited selection at the discount price, of which I decided on the Weezer style with Amber lenses.

The Gunnar eyewear are marketed as being "High Performance" and "optimized for the digital screen". In terms that apply to me: they offer +0.2 diopters for a slight magnification, they help with glare, and tone down the brightness of reading text on a white background. For myself they offer a better experience working in front of a computer for ~9 hours a day. Here's shot of what it looks like through a lens.

Seeing as I started this post nearly a month ago and just haven't had the time to write as in-depth as I would like, I'm going to make this Part 1 of a set of posts. In the next post I will lay out some pros and cons I have come up with over my time using them. In the mean time check out the links in the post, Gunnar has many more styles, and Deals.Woot always has good deals to watch out for.

Copper River Salmon is in!

If you live you in the Pacific Northwest you know my excitement, if not bring up the Google and type in Copper River Salmon. My wife and I were at Costco and found they had it, we got a 1.5 pound Sockeye fillet for $15. If you've ever had to buy Copper River Salmon at the end of the season, you know that is a steal at $9.99/lb. Last year my dad paid $12/lb for a whole fish, including the head.

This was also my first chance to get the grill fired up this year and I wanted it to be real tasty, so of course I consulted Meathead at AmazingRibs.com. I finally decided on going with his Portland Seared Salmon on a Salad, of course that was the first article I found, possibly the only. We added a light sprinkling of balsamic salad dressing, and my wife made some very tasty Avocado & Mango salsa to have along side. Here's how it turned out:

You can see the Avocado & Mango salsa in the upper right corner of the pic. I ended up just cooking up half the fillet using this method, and we're saving the rest for another meal. We haven't decided on how to cook that up, possibly a citrus recipe we've used before.

Stumptown Comics Fest

I told my wife it was time for her to go "full nerd" and attend a comic-con, so we headed out to Stumptown Comics Fest at the Oregon Convention Center. It was a lot of fun,  great to see all the local artists, and we got some art we liked. I'm still on a quest to get more cool art for my office at work, check my last post Three Ewok Deathstar Office Art. I found a number of things I liked, but finally settled on the following "Enlist in the Empire" print from Monkey Minion Press.

You can check out there Monkey Minion Etsy Store for more great prints. I'm really tempted to get the Muppet Busters for the home office.

My wife found a couple great pieces, but my favorite of her's has to be the Cerberus Pug by Sara Oleksyk.

I also picked up a couple G.I. Joe trade paperbacks from Things from Another World: G.I. Joe Volume 1 and G.I. Joe: COBRA. We will definitely have to add this as one our yearly events to attend.

Three Ewok Deathstar Office Art

The Star Wars shop recently had 30% off everything in stock, and I wanted a 3 Ewok Deathstar shirt and some art to put in my office at work. Unfortunately they only had the shirt in womens sizes, and the cheapest art was $75 and what I wanted was $150. My wife suggested I get the womens shirt and stretch it on a canvas, she is to crafting and projects what I am to programming. After measuring the size of the graphic I found I needed a canvas about 11.5x14, and was able to find an 11x14 on sale. Unfortunately I stapled the left side first so the graphic is pulled a little more to the left than I'd like (should have stapled the right first because there's less important parts of the graphic there).

Here's the finished work on my wall, and back all stapled up:

All together the cost was probably under $20, and from the door to my office it looks like a velvet painting. I have some old nerd shirts from con's and such, I think I might do this with some of those.

Welcome

After a couple months of having a "under construction" site, I finally went ahead and installed Word Press. My previous site was hand-made at thesean.net with cutting edge ajax circa 2001. I just have not had the time to create something myself, so I'll go with this for now.
